My Philosophy

I most identify with the constructivism learning theory. The constructivism learning theory suggests that people learn from experience. I identify with this theory because I feel that I learn best when I am doing something. For example, the other day I had to color my aunt’s hair. I had no previous knowledge on how to do this other than watching my hairdresser color my hair. I had someone explain to me how to do it and then I went for it. I learned as I went. The process made more sense to me once I began coloring her hair, not when it was explained to me. The same goes for when I am learning in school. In my college statistics class, I was always lost while the teacher explained how to solve a problem, but once I started working on it, the pieces began to fall in place for me. The constructivism learning theory might not be the best theory for everyone, but I personally learn from experience and form knowledge based off of my experiences, which is why I best identify with it.

As a teacher, a learning activity that I would use based off of the constructivism theory would be creating a virtual autobiography. The goal of this project would be for the students to become more familiar with the program that they chose to use, whether it be google slides, google docs, or even creating a movie. I would first show the children many different examples of autobiographies using different programs. I would then give them a list of guidelines to include in their autobiographies. From there, I would ask the students to set goals for themselves for this project and allow them to begin exploring the program of their choice. This activity will allow the student to see examples and then explore the program of their choice by themselves and learn from doing, not from being told or watching someone else do it.
