Working with the NJ Core Curriculum Content Standards

Create a document using a word processing application. (K-2)- For this activity, every second grader will be in front of their own computer. I will be on my computer (which will be linked to the smart board). I will start on the home screen of my computer and show step by step how to login to google docs and open a new document. In the document, I will then type a paragraph about my day. I will be sure to include a title and change the font and font size. After demonstrating this, I will go over the directions one more time and then let the students try it themselves. Their task will be to create a document and write a paragraph about themselves. They will have to include a title and make it size 12 font in times new roman. During the activity, I will be walking around the classroom making sure that everybody understands the assignment. This activity will allow the students to see an example and then work individually on achieving the indicator at hand.

Describe how the parts of a common toy or tool interact and work as part of a system. (K-2)– For this activity, I will begin by showing the second graders a video of the inside of a jack in the box. (There are videos of this on Youtube) The video will allow the students to see the parts of the jack in the box and how they work together to make the monkey pop out. I will then describe it to the students again to make sure that everyone understands the process. I will then break the students up into groups of 4 and give each group a common tool or toy. (a tricycle, a water table in which you pour water in the top which then sets off a series of events, and more) As a group, the students will have to work together and brainstorm how the parts of that toy interact and work together. At the end of the activity, each group will stand up and present their toy and how it works. This activity involves thinking out of the box and teamwork!

List and demonstrate the steps to an everyday task. (K-2)– To help second graders achieve this indicator, I will use the Constructivism Learning Method. I will have the students complete a project in which they will use any google program to list and or demonstrate the steps of an everyday task. As the teacher, I will put an example of the task on the board. I will give examples of a finished product in three different online programs: google docs, google slides and google slides. My examples will include pictures, lists and more on how to do an everyday task like making a bed. I will then give the students guidelines of what is expected and what should be included in their projects. For this activity, the students will be able to use any program that they choose, which is why I gave a few examples using different programs. The students will then begin the project and explore the program that they chose. I will be by their side to help them, but to achieve this indicator, they will learn by doing and gaining experience.

Use appropriate terms in conversation (e.g., basic vocabulary words: input, output, the operating system, debug, and algorithm). (K-2)-An activity to help second graders achieve this indicator would use the jigsaw method of teaching. To prepare for this lesson, I would make a list of the basic technology vocabulary words and their definitions. I would then split the students into groups of 4. From their groups of 4, they would divide into 2 pairs. Each individual student will then receive a piece of paper with the list of words without definitions because they will fill the definitions out through the corse of this activity. Each pair of students will then be given a strip of paper with a vocabulary word and the definition of the word. (If there are 8 pairs of students, you would use 8 vocabulary words for this activity) The pair would then work together to teach the other pair in their group about the vocabulary word. As they are learning, they will write down the definitions they learn on their blank paper. The teacher will make sure each pair has taught the other their word, and will then have one pair from each table switch tables, and again, the pairs will teach their word to the other pair. You will continue to move the students until every pair has been taught every word and everyone’s paper is fully filled out. This activity allows the students to work together to teach their classmates and is beneficial in many ways.
